The Fine Art of Pretending by Rachel Harris *Cover Reveal *

So if you have been following my blog for a while you already know that I am a SUPER HUGE fan of Rachel Harris. She is an author that I will always read anything that she writes! SO I'm so glad to be part of her cover reveal for her upcoming YA Contemporary Romance THE FINE ART OF PRETENDING!

About THE FINE ART OF PRETENDING:

Release Date: September 30, 2014
Author: Rachel Harris

According to the guys at Fairfield Academy, there are two types of girls: the kind you hook up with, and the kind you're friends with. Seventeen-year-old Alyssa Reed is the second type. And she hates it. With just one year left to change her rank, she devises a plan to become the first type by homecoming, and she sets her sights on the perfect date—Justin Carter, Fairfield Academy’s biggest hottie and most notorious player.

With 57 days until the dance, Aly launches Operation Sex Appeal and sheds her tomboy image. The only thing left is for Justin actually to notice her. Enter best friend Brandon Taylor, the school’s second biggest hottie, and now Aly’s pretend boyfriend. With his help, elevating from “funny friend” to “tempting vixen” is only a matter of time.

But when everything goes according to plan, the inevitable “break up” leaves their friendship in shambles, and Aly and Brandon with feelings they can’t explain. And the fake couple discovers pretending can sometimes cost you the one thing you never expected to want.

About Rachel Harris:

Author of fun and flirty escapes about sassy girls-next-door and the hot guys that make them swoon. I grew up in New Orleans, watching soap operas with my grandmother, and staying up late sneak-reading my mama's romance novels. Today, I still stay up late reading romances, only now I do so openly.

A Cajun cowgirl now living in Houston, I firmly believe life's problems can be solved with a hot, sugar-coated beignet or a thick slice of king cake, and that screaming at strangers for cheap, plastic beads is acceptable behavior in certain situations.

I homeschool my two beautiful girls and watch countless hours of Food Network and reality television with my amazing husband. I write YA, NA, and Adult romance and LOVE talking with readers!

Uninvited by Sophie Jordan

**I received and eARC of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Thank you HarperTeen!

13645645When Davy Hamilton's tests come back positive for Homicidal Tendency Syndrome (HTS)-aka the kill gene-she loses everything. Her boyfriend ditches her, her parents are scared of her, and she can forget about her bright future at Juilliard. Davy doesn't feel any different, but genes don't lie. One day she will kill someone.

Only Sean, a fellow HTS carrier, can relate to her new life. Davy wants to trust him; maybe he's not as dangerous as he seems. Or maybe Davy is just as deadly.

The first in a two-book series, Uninvited tackles intriguing questions about free will, identity, and human nature. Steeped in New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan's trademark mix of gripping action and breathless romance, this suspenseful tale is perfect for fans of James Patterson, Michelle Hodkin, and Lisa McMann.

My Thoughts:

This is the first book I have read in at least a month that I couldn't bear putting down. One of those books that when I HAD to put it down, that's all I was thinking about. From the very first chapter I was completely hooked on this book and what was happening in Davy's life.

Davina (Davy) Hamilton comes from an easy, privileged life. She's a musical prodigy; smart, spent her entire life in private school, popular, and her boyfriend is the hottest guy in school. She has a charmed life. Even her best friend, Tori, is jealous of her. Then one day Davy gets a call from her mom to rush home from school to find out that she has HTS (Homicidal Tendency Syndrome), otherwise known as the kill gene. Davy's life quickly begins to fall apart. She loses everything and is thrown into a world with a mysterious imprinted HTS carrier, Sean. Davy doesn't feel any different than she ever has, sure she wouldn't ever hurt anyone. She quickly realizes not everything she's learned about her world is so true, and she won't be as quick to judge anyone anymore.

Davy's story had me intrigued and anxious. I swear I couldn't read fast enough. I had to stop myself from skimming ahead in several parts just because I couldn't stand not knowing what was going to happen. The writing was flawless, and Jordan kept me glued to every page. Even with a blooming romance happening I liked that the story really stayed on track and more focused on Davy and her life, rather than switching gears and becoming romance focused like a lot of YA tends to do. Not to say I didn't absolutely love the romance....because I DID! The story was just so much deeper and darker than that and I liked seeing Davy as an individual person and not just part of a duo.

I loved Davy. She had such good character growth in the book. She went from being this overly confident, spoiled girl who had an amazing life to losing herself then finding her way and figuring out this new, seemingly impossible situation she is thrown into. I enjoyed watching her grow and adapt with her life and the things that happened. I loved that even when she was given options to be protected she would speak up and push through. She wanted to take care of things for herself even though she was terrified.

Sean is just perfect. PERFECT. He had me swooning so many times, I wasn't even halfway through the book and I declared him a spot on the Book Boyfriend List. He was mysterious, broody, seemingly dangerous, but like this dark knight in shining armor. I. JUST. LOVE. THIS. GUY. There is such a build up for everything that happened between Davy and Sean. This was one of those books that I just wanted to yell at them SO many times to just flipping kiss already because I couldn't take the anticipation anymore. I was seriously dying over here.

Some other mentionable characters are Mitchell, Davy's brother. He is such an awesome brother. One chapter it even made me tear up because of the emotions Mitchell goes through because of the things happening to Davy. Gil, another carrier she meets early on, turns out to be an amazing friend and ally for Davy. He's not your typical person you think of being a carrier either and Davy quickly bonds with him over that. Zac and Tori, I just want to mention because they suck and I need to let that out. I was in a raging fit at them for maybe the first 1/3 of the book.

UNINVITED was just all around dark and thrilling, with a little bit of swooning in there to make you melt at times. I highly recommend to everyone. I think it can appeal to a pretty wide audience. I'm definitely dying to get my hands on the next book!

Vitro by Jessica Khoury *Blog Tour*

** I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Razorbill!

Welcome to the VITRO blog tour! Jessica Khoury, the talented author of Origin, is back with a death-defying tropical adventure. Follow along over the next two weeks as Jessica takes readers behind the scenes of her latest novel.

VITRO Synopsis:

17617762When Sophie is summoned by her long-absent mother, a scientist who works in a classified lab, Sophie throws caution to the wind and heads to the South Pacific. She sweet-talks her way onto a tiny supply plane piloted by Jim Julien, who lives on Guam with his alcoholic father. Jim is captivated by Sophie and against his better judgement agrees to take Sophie to the secretive and tropical Skin Island where her mom has been working for so many years.

There Sophie and Jim are met not by her mother but instead by Nicholas, a handsome, brilliant boy who leads them to Lux--a girl who looks exactly like Sophie. Lux is Sophie's genetic twin and was bred using in vitro fertilization. But why? And just what have the scientists created Lux to be capable of?

With lyrical writing and ever-increasing tension, Jessica Khoury draws out the explosive answers in her much-anticipated followup to Origin.

About Jessica Khoury:

Jessica Khoury is 23 years old. She has red hair. She was homeschooled. She's an avid soccer player and was a three-time All-American striker. She is of Syrian and Scottish descent. She went to college in the same tiny Georgia town in which she was born and raised. And she's a prodigiously talented writer with a huge following.

Jessica Khoury lives in Toccoa, GA with her husband, Benjamin. You can visit her online at www.jessicakhoury.com.

Jessica’s Guest Post:

Vitro is told through multiple perspectives, with half of the story seen through the eyes of Jim Julien. At 18, Jim has taken over his dad’s charter flight business on Guam. He spends his days taxiing tourists through the Pacific skies, surfing, and hanging out with friends. It’s been ten years since he’s seen Sophie Crue. They were neighbors as children and often when Sophie’s parents were working, she spent the day at Jim’s house. Though he doesn't recognize her at first when they reunite a decade later, Jim is quickly intrigued by this grown-up version of his childhood friend. Sophie’s desperate pleading leads him to go against his better judgment in flying her to Skin Island.

I loved writing from Jim’s perspective and he quickly became my favorite character in Vitro. His love for flying, which is central to his character, is inspired by my dad, who flies the same kind of plane as Jim. For the scenes involving Jim’s plane, I was constantly sending questions and excerpts for my dad to check. He’d counsel me on what kind of plane Jim would fly, how it handled, and teach me how airplanes actually land or crash or take off. It’s always helpful having experts in the family!

My Thoughts:

When I originally requested this book from Penguin I did not realize it was a companion novel. I then flipped out for a minute because I thought I had to read ORIGIN beforehand...well to those wondering YOU DON'T. :-) I was able to follow along in this book just fine without even knowing what ORIGIN was about.

I'm going to make this review somewhat shorter than my usual because I found this book really hard to put into words overall. I'm also skipping a recap since the synopsis is above and I don't want you all feeling you are reading for days with all the other words. ;-)

I enjoyed reading this book and thought it was a very good sci-fi. There was a good amount of action and suspense, and some slight romance thrown in there too. The writing was well written and made it a very quick read. The setting of Skin Island was very vividly described. I felt like I could see the island through the characters eyes, and could feel the darkness and fear from the unknown. The setting and way it was described was easily my favorite part and quickly drew me in.

Characters were not the strong suit for this book, but it did not keep me from enjoying it. The book switches point of views between Sophie, Lux, and Jim in third person. I always enjoy switching point of views because I get to see everything going on and not just something in one place. Since the three were on different parts of the island or handling different aspects it was nice seeing what all was going on at all times. I just wished we had had a little more time with Jim and Sophie to become more familiar with them before all the action started, without that it was too easy to be detached from them while reading.

With that being said, my favorite character point of view was Lux. It was mainly because I never really knew what she would do or say so it gave me some angst. Sophie was my next okay; I liked seeing her outlook on the entire situation since it was so close to her emotionally. She was brave also so that made me like her even more. She was however a little naive to some situations and I wanted to reach in and shake her several times. Jim was my least favorite character. I never could connect with him through the entire book. I just felt no real emotions from him or anything to make me connect. I felt he used the same "tone" through the entire book and those chapters made me want to step back from the book a few times. Thankfully Lux and Sophie's chapters were much longer and took over most of the book as a whole.

The plot flowed easily and while I could see a lot of the twists coming I still enjoyed seeing everything happen. I hated some of the things that happened but I find that to be a good thing because that means I was emotionally wrapped in the book. I found myself really disturbed by things that happened on Skin Island with the Vitros. The science lab and Vitros were really interesting in the scientific aspect of things. While not all questions were answered or tied up for you in a pretty little bow, I still felt it was a solid plot and gave me all the answers I NEEDed.

Overall I would recommend this book to fans of ORIGIN and a quick-paced science fiction read. I think there will be many readers that completely love this book! This is one book I think I would enjoy better as an audiobook. Simply because I feel like the narration would possibly make it feel like there is more emotion when it lacks emotion from characters in scenes. I'm considering getting the audio just to test this theory.

A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller

**I received an ARC copy of this book from Viking Juvenile in exchange of an honest review. Thank you Viking!

18079501Welcome to the world of the fabulously wealthy in London, 1909, where dresses and houses are overwhelmingly opulent, social class means everything, and women are taught to be nothing more than wives and mothers. Into this world comes seventeen-year-old Victoria Darling, who wants only to be an artist—a nearly impossible dream for a girl.

After Vicky poses nude for her illicit art class, she is expelled from her French finishing school. Shamed and scandalized, her parents try to marry her off to the wealthy Edmund Carrick-Humphrey. But Vicky has other things on her mind: her clandestine application to the Royal College of Art; her participation in the suffragette movement; and her growing attraction to a working-class boy who may be her muse—or may be the love of her life. As the world of debutante balls, corsets, and high society obligations closes in around her, Vicky must figure out: just how much is she willing to sacrifice to pursue her dreams?

My Thoughts:

I haven't read a ton of YA Historical Fiction but I can already tell you I am a huge fan, so when I saw A MAD, WICKED FOLLY was being released this year I immediately requested a copy from Penguin in hopes I would get one. I am so glad I was fortunate enough to get my hands on it! It's such a light book, as in not overly angst filled, but it is so touching and speaks to your heart. I adore this book and it is one I can definitely see myself reading over and over again.

Victoria (aka Vicky) is living in the Edwardian Era where women have no rights and are seen as mere entertainment and mindless. Vicky desires to be an artist, not just for leisure, but it is her dream to be displayed among the greats. After doing a shameful thing her family pulls her out of school in France and away from her secret art classes back home to be married and made into a "proper woman". Vicky has plans of her own to go to college for art and doesn't plan to let anything get in her way. She doesn't realize how far she will go or the things she will do to make her own way in life and have her own free will until meeting a suffragette, Lucy, and a Police Constable, Will.

I am completely in love with this era. I'm honestly in love with most eras where there are lady's maids, gorgeous dresses, and swoony gentlemen. Waller took me into the setting. She painted the world beautifully and I felt like I was there in the art classes when Vicky was drawing. When she observed the suffragettes and watched all the ways the women were treated I connected with her sadness. It all definitely made me realize I would not have fit in with this era well, being seen as a "mindless woman". (Or maybe I would of then since that was the normal, so maybe I'm just really grateful that the suffragettes existed and someone stood up for our rights then.) I saw all the beauty she saw when drawing her art and spending time with her muse, Will. I felt as if I was there the whole way through.

Vicky has such a wonderful voice. I loved her character and how tough she was. She started out in a world where in her class it was all but impossible for a woman to make any choices of her own. She was expected to wed and have babies and be nothing more than a wife and a mother. Vicky knew that that would not be enough and held onto her goal no matter what was thrown her way. At the beginning some choices Vicky made I wanted her to be stronger, try harder, but in the end I think she did the right things for her and her life and her character growth was amazing.

Sophie, Vicky's lady's maid, became a very good friend along the way and I really liked their relationship. I found Sophie to be a tremendous influence on Vicky and she helped her so much along the way. Vicky met Will while drawing and from that moment on I couldn't wait to see where things would go for them. Will was a charming gentleman who had a heart of gold and was sympathetic to the women and their pleas. He ended up helping Vicky out in so many ways and their relationship that unfolded was written beautifully. Edmund, Vicky's fiancé, is a coward. That is the only word I have for him and the things he does. He is a man and is able to make his own choices and decisions and yet he was a complete coward with his life. It was frustrating to see his actions when he had choices compared to these women who had none but fought the entire time. One more mentionable character was Lucy; she was easily one of the strongest women in the book. She made a great encourager and friend for Vicky and I wouldn't mind seeing a book about her.

Waller did an amazing job depicting this era and flawlessly writing Vicky's story. I enjoyed learning about the suffragettes’ world and the way it worked for them. At the end of the book I also tremendously enjoyed all the notes that were there to read. I was able to learn more about the suffragettes, styles, and the era in general. This book would work well in a history class in high school.

This is a book that is a must for my shelf. Anyone who has a love for historical fiction and feminism will devour this book just as I did. I also think that anyone who loves a beautifully written world and plot will adore this book.

Excerpt of Chapter One:

There were few things in the world that mystified Ciardis Weathervane more than the Imperial Courts of Sandrin. An intricate and multi-layered triad of courts with the Imperial family at the top, the landed nobles squarely in the middle and the wealthy ton comprising of the merchants, the artists and the mages at the bottom. If you could call it a bottom. Because nobles could be mages, Imperial family members had independent wealth and all of them played their games in pursuit of their own desires. Fidelity, honor and duty to the land wasn’t what drove these courtiers. Pride of place and greed for more took prominence above all. So landing back at Court on the arms of the woman that most everyone wanted dead and a man accused of aiding a serial killer wasn’t her best idea yet.

Broaden Your Shelves Challenge

SO I got this idea when I was thinking about how I wanted to branch out in genres this year. Try a little something new or get more into a genre I'm not all that familiar with. Along the way asking for recommendations on Twitter I noticed a TON of other people saying they wanted to start trying new things too this year, and that was a goal for them, SO since I'm all social and love to do things with friends I present to you:

Broaden Your Shelves Challenge
(Meredith totally gets all kudos for name)

SO first off I would like to see how much interest there is in doing this to start with before I go through the steps of putting it all together. My ideas are to do something like this:

♥ One genre a month

♥ Read/review (reviews can be just a few lines) at least 3 books of the genre of the month

♥ I will choose 3 from recommendations I have been given, you can read those 3 or any other 3 you choose

♥ Every month my favorite out of the 3 I read I will do a giveaway for that book. (If it is something you already own you can choose a different one from the 3 I read.)

♥ You do NOT have to participate each month. If there is a genre you already read enough of and want to skip that month, that is fine.

I went back and forth about the giveaway but I have decided that since I'm already going to be hosting 1-3 giveaways a month for all my blog readers already that the giveaways for this challenge will ONLY be for the challenge participants! I will have prizes for both US or INTL participants. It will probably go a case by case on what the book is whether the prizes will be different for US/INTL each time.

Please let me know any questions or suggestions you may have! If you think you are interested please leave your link below. I'm hoping to get this started in February!

LOOK AMAZING KINDLE DEAL TODAY ONLY!!!

Head on over to Amazon to snag A TALE OF TWO CENTURIES today ONLY on the cheap! Haven't read MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY yet?? No problem! These are companion novels and can totally be read out of order! So what are you waiting for? Go...GO!!!!

Flashback | Dance With Me

“Dance with me.” He cupped her waist, which wasn’t exactly where his hand belonged, but they were alone, and he’d do what he pleased. Between school, and working the farm, not to mention Quinn’s family, they barely got any time together. But what time they did spend together meant more to Jonah than he knew how to say.

“Always.” Quinn stumbled on the next step, but recovered. She stared at her feet, watching as he led.

“1-2-3, 1-2-3,” he counted. He could feel the smile tickling his lips as they found a rhythm. Quinn was adorable when she concentrated, and even more so when she wanted to get something right.

“Well, you suck at ballet but you’re pretty good at waltzing. Someday you’ll have to tell me how you learned.” Quinn squeezed his hand. “And you’re not half bad at being a boyfriend.”

Jonah couldn’t hold back the grin any longer. “Boyfriend, huh? Is that what I am? That would make you my…girlfriend.”

“I mean…if you want to be…”

She was flushed, and flustered, and completely adorable. Jonah pulled Quinn into his arms, and kissed her lips. She melted against him, and he smiled against her mouth. The response was as automatic as the sun washing away the moonlight - it was something he simply knew would happen. Anytime he kissed her, happiness overtook him.

“Yeah.” He kissed her forehead, lips lingering. “I want to be.”

SOOOOOO stinkin swoony right?! ♥ Now for the lovely cover!

(Cover designer: Marie.)

But doing so is easier said than done when sexy Jonah Walker saunters back into her life.

Quinn shattered Jonah’s heart once, so getting involved with her isn’t something he’s sure he’s ready to do again. He became someone he didn’t recognize when he left home. He’s spent the last years burying his pain by keeping everyone in his life at arm’s length. Now he needs to get to know his family again, and finally become who he wants to be.

**Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week we are given a new topic to make a top ten list. :)

This week's topic is:

Top Ten Goals/Resolutions For 2014 (bookish, not bookish or a blend)

BLENDED LIST:

1. Write reviews IMMEDIATELY when I am done with a book.

2. Schedule posts in ADVANCE! This way if "real life" gets me away from the computer for a bit hopefully I have some stuff already up.

3. LESS time on Twitter O.O This one will be HARD!!

4. Get more organized, in blogging and in real life.

5. Exercise and eat right....I mean isn't this a universal one?!

6. Go to more book signings

7. Try out new genres

8. Be more money savy $$$$$

9. Get on a regular sleeping schedule....seriously I don't sleep a lot and I have three kids and it's BRUTAL!

10. Spend more time with the hubs away from electronics ♥

What are some of your goals??

Unhinged by A. G. Howard

**SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVE NOT READ SPLINTERED**

Unhinged (Splintered #2)
by A.G. Howard

17449197

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she's always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she'll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

My Thoughts:

I LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED....did I mention LOVED this book. It was perfection, sprinkled with awesomeness, rolled in incredible! *throws confetti*

Ok now that that's out of my system...

If you are a fan of Splintered get ready for another amazing story full of Alyssa, Jeb, and Morpheus and all the Wonderland ways...except this time we are staying in the human realm. O.O While I missed Wonderland and still hope we get more of that setting in Ensnared (which I think we will), this book worked nicely and made a clear message that Alyssa isn't going to have it so easily picking her human realm over the Wonderland realm. And she isn't going to get to choose so easily where her heart lies.

So I'm going to do this review a little more "formal" than I normally do because I'm afraid if I don't have a little bit of structure I will just totally fan girl all over the place....

THE LOVE TRIANGLE: Howard hands down writes one of the best triangles I have ever seen. Triangles are hard to do in a book and hard to get right and make feel realistic BUT when I have read two books in a series and STILL can't choose which guy I prefer then the author is doing something right. I am usually the first to jump on the "bad boy, loner" train (ahem Morpheus) and leave the "good guy" (ahem Jeb) in the dust, but it just hasn't been this way at all. I was hoping this book would make me finally clear on whose "Team" I was, but all it has done is made me decide I'm on TeamJebpheus....I just CAN'T choose. Jeb is a good guy, but he also has the hot edge and he is SO fierce and loyal to Alyssa that I just want him to be happy and get everything he wants. I love the way he handles the things he discovers in this book, it all made me love him even more. I want to give more details but...SPOILERS! O.o  MORPHEUS he is deceiving, mischievous, annoying, but gosh darn-it he loves Alyssa and under it all he is a good guy. I loved being able to see little chinks in his armor in this book finally. It was all SO swoony!

THE PLOT: There were SO many unexpected to twists in this book that I would of NEVER seen coming....like AT ALL. When we start discovering all these little secrets about Wonderland along the way I was in shock most of the time and SO ready to see where it is all going. I also like seeing all the memories that were brought into play between different characters and finding out more about Wonderland and the creatures there in general.

THE CREATURES: Honestly I just want to give a shout out to Chessie & Rabid....because I totes love them and I want to walk around with Chessie on my shoulder for reals ♥

THE ENDING: The ending....WILL KILL YOU....you have been warned! It will leave you to BEG A.G. Howard for Ensnared NOW because gosh darn-it January 2015 is WAY to far away and we all just need to know all the things and MY BABIES....... :-(

My Rating:
♥♥♥♥♥

I completely recommend this book to anyone and everyone that can read....seriously!
