Death Is But A Dream by Erin Hayes Blog Tour: Excerpt and Giveaway

Death Is But A Dream

18269916
Goodreads Description:

Caught between life and death, all Callie wants is to live again.

Homicide detective Callie Saunders knows that death isn’t all pearly gates and angels. After being hit by a bus, she finds that it's the ancient gods and goddesses of Greek mythology who are in charge of everything.

So when Hades offers her a deal, she accepts. If she wants to be brought back to life, she’ll have to figure out who is trying to kill his son. But if she fails, both her soul and the world will be destroyed.

With the odds mounting against her, it’ll take everything she has within her to wake up from death. But the rules are constantly changing. And someone wants her to stay dead.

Excerpt:

“Don’t look so uncomfortable, Callista,” he chided. He gestured to a chair in front of the desk. “Here, have a seat.”
“It’s Callie,” I told him.
“Callie then,” Hades corrected himself. “Have a seat, Callie.”
Before I had the chance to reconsider, I quickly sat down on the chair—which happened to be the most comfortable seat I had ever sat on—and I perched to attention.
With a wave of his hand, Hades produced a tablet, which he flicked through with detachment.
“Callista...Callie...Saunders. Twenty-seven years old. Graduated first in her class at the University of Pennsylvania. Degree earned: a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice. Joined the police force at San Francisco PD for two years before becoming a police detective.”
He rattled off my credentials. I closed my eyes, wondering how much information was in that tablet of his. I suspected lots.
This felt a whole lot like a job interview. My gut instinct told me that, in a way, it was. And my gut instinct was rarely wrong.
Why the hell was I having a job interview?
“In three years, you’ve earned quite a few awards for your work,” Hades went on. “You’ve solved many murder cases, even stopped a few from happening. You’re devoted to your job, and you’re very good at it. You're highly recommended by your colleagues. You’re an excellent marksman. A black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. You spend most of your spare time on side cases, and you especially are trying to bring down underworld Kingpins, like one Stephen Cross, for which your boss suspended you once.”
I flushed deeply. That part wasn't my fault. And if no one believed me that the underworld mob bosses were a big problem, then I was going to have to bring them down myself. Granted, many would have argued that I had been too involved in that case.
Hades continued. “And you have a deeply seated sense of right and wrong. You have no roommates, you live alone. Survived by your mother, Kathleen McCormick, and your stepfather Seth McCormick.” He flicked through another page. “And you recently broke up with your boyfriend of four years just two months ago.”
My eyes widened at the mention of Ben. “That last part is my own personal business,” I snapped.
“Hit a nerve, have I?” He seemed amused.
“I don’t see what any of this has to do with me being dead.”
Hades’ eyes sparkled. He said something in all seriousness that I had never thought I’d hear spoken out loud before. “Dead, no. Mostly dead, yes.”
My heart thudded heavily in my chest. “What?”
He feigned disinterest as he flicked through the tablet. “You threw yourself in front of a bus to save a little girl. Now the little girl is alive, when she was meant to die. And you...” he grinned down at me, “you’re in a very deep coma at UCSF Medical Center.”
The news hit me like a ton of bricks. My knuckles were white and the room suddenly felt very hot. “I’m...I’m alive?” I looked down at my hands in disbelief and held them up to the light to inspect them.
No wonder everyone was treating me strangely. I was different. I was still alive.
Hades nodded somberly. “For the moment, yes.”
I gaped at him. “For the moment?” That sounded like a threat.
“You see, you weren’t supposed to save that girl, Callie. She was meant to die. To become the martyr behind a movement towards stricter punishment for reckless driving. It would have saved many lives down the line.”
I swallowed. My throat felt dry. No matter what he said, I wouldn’t regret saving that girl. In my final moments before waking up here, I knew I would never regret that decision, yet it still felt awkward to hear all of this.
“Because of that change of plans, I have a whole bunch of paperwork to fill out, you see. And there’s a spot in the Underworld that you’re currently occupying. I could have you fill her place and take elements from your future to put on hers and vice versa. It would make my life so much easier. Unless...” His voice trailed off and he looked at me expectantly.
He wanted me to jump on that word, thinking that I would demand to know what I could do to get me back to Life. I didn’t rise to the bait. This whole thing smelled fishy, and the thought of it was pissing me off.
“You’re blackmailing me,” I sneered at him, fury raging within me at the realization. “You want me to do something in return before you allow me to wake up.”
I hated corruption and I hated being manipulated, both of which Hades was doing to me right now.

He raised his hand in a gesture of supplication. “Not blackmail,” he assured. “I’m looking to employ you for a time.”

BLOG TOUR: The Prophecy by Erin Albert

I am SO excited to be a part of this blog tour. If you pay attention to my blog you already know that I have been DYING for this book. I was super excited when I finally got my hands on it and am equally excited to finally get to share my thoughts about THE PROPHECY with you. But first here is a little info on the book and Erin Albert. Make sure to go to the very bottom for an awesome giveaway provided by Erin also.

Author:

Erin Albert is an author and fitness trainer.  Since she picked up Morris the Moose Goes to School at age four, she has been infatuated with the written word.  She went on to work as a grammar and writing tutor in college and is still teased by her family and friends for being a member of the "Grammar Police."  In her free time, Erin enjoys acting, running, kickboxing, and, of course, reading and writing.

The Prophecy (The Fulfillment #1)

Back Cover:

Growing up on a small farm in the kingdom of Vanguard, seventeen-year-old Layla Givens lives a deceptively tranquil existence. But her carefully constructed life quickly falls apart when she’s abducted by a religious zealot who proclaims her The Fulfillment of an ancient peace prophecy and whisks her away to marry her greatest enemy.

Wilhelm, Prince of the Ethereals, is reluctant to meet his new bride. He's grown up believing Vanguards are evil, an enemy to fight and fear...not love. Can he set aside his prejudices and work alongside Layla to bring lasting peace after centuries of war?

Nash, a loner who has never fit in, carries a huge secret, one big enough to destroy both kingdoms. When he accidently meets Layla, he’s no longer content to live in the shadows, but he must resist his growing attraction—for her safety and for the longevity of the two kingdoms.

When Nash's secret is revealed, a firestorm sweeps through both realms, with Layla at the center. Now she must choose between duty and desire while the fate of two nations hangs in the balance.

Excerpt:

Even though she had no chance to escape now, Layla shoved the Elder with all her might. The blow sent him flying into the baker’s door, which splintered under the force, and she darted forward.  The Vanguard soldiers moved to block her.

“We are all Vanguards,” she pleaded. “Please let me go.”

For a moment, they hesitated.  Layla used the opening to slip around them.  She ran as fast as her legs would carry her, but they proved to be too slow.  Within moments, the soldiers leapt upon her, knocking her to the ground.  Wrenching Layla up by her hair, they dragged her back to the Elder, whose face now bled from his encounter with the baker’s door.

“I see you’re going to be trouble.” He brushed the dirt off his robes.  “You can’t escape your destiny, girl.”

My Thoughts:

IT'S FINALLY HERE!!! THE PROPHECY'S RELEASE DAY IS HERE!!!!! I have been waiting to read this book since April and it did NOT disappoint. THE PROPHECY met every expectation I had and more. From the first sentence I was captivated and I devoured this book quickly. It is definitely a "one sitting read".

For ALL the love I have for this book this has got to be one of the hardest reviews that I have had to write. I have gone back and forth writing it for a week and nothing ever seems to be good enough, or explain well enough why I think you should read it, or why I loved it. But I will give it a try. I feel that the description about does a pretty good job telling you about the plot so I'm just going to dive right in to what I loved about the book.

The characters were some of the best written ones I have come across in a debut novel. Erin really seemed to truly know her characters. They all had very distinct personalities to back each of them up. Layla was a fierce female lead. Even though she was thrown into a really messed up situation as being claimed as the fulfillment, she did what she had to do to keep her family and friends safe.

Along the way she meets Nash; mysterious, sweet Nash. (I love him by the way, I stake claim on him....just wanted all you ladies to know ♥) There is a wonderful attraction between these two that feels very real. I was very happy not to have a sudden "I love you" type relationship between them. Even though there are so many things that come up that make their relationship pretty much impossible I can't help but root for them.

One complication is Wil. WAIT WAIT WAIT....no I'm not leading you into a love triangle. While on the surface and without giving spoilers it may come across that this book will take you into a love triangle, but it really doesn’t. As part of being the fulfillment Layla is betrothed to Wil, it is practically her duty to marry him. I can't really say more than that because I don't want to spoil anything, but seriously it didn't get all “typical love triangle” on me. BUT I will tell you that you will want it to....yes you will. While I LOVE Nash, Wil is....ahhhh he's wonderful. Both guys are equally swoony and my guess is that ladies will be fighting over who they think Layla should be with no matter where her heart lays.

Some other characters that I really adored were Vespa, Grant, and Samson. While we don't get to see Samson a lot in this book I know he will be a big player later on in the series. Grant is just another amazing guy living in THE PROPHECY world, and Vespa is someone I would want to have as a best friend.

Of course with all the wonderful characters, there must be some evil ones. I'm not going to go through who those are, mainly because I feel like it will take away from the story some for you when reading. But just know that there are some REAL evil people and you will want them to die a brutal death when it is all said and done.

The world building is also beautiful and executed well. While the book is set mainly in the Ethereal kingdom, I felt like I was really there with Layla. My favorite part was the maze that kept the kingdom guarded. I also was intrigued by the Vanguards super strength, and the Ethereal’s powers to mess with others minds.

If you follow me on twitter you might have seen that I pretty much live tweeted the entire time I read this book. It gave me SO many feels it was unreal. I was happy, conflicted, sad, MAD, devastated, swoony, flailing, you name it....I was doing it. Anytime my emotions are tapped into that way it's a sign of an amazing book. As if the book as a whole wasn't wonderful and emotion provoking enough, Erin left us with a MAJOR cliffhanger. I have a love/hate relationship with those things. I love them because they make me want more NOW, I hate them....well because they make me want more NOW and I can't have it now. Erin leaves two MAJOR things happening at the very end that I'm still thinking about what it means for everyone, especially Layla. I definitely can't wait to get my hands on the next book.

I definitely recommend any fans of YA Fantasy, fast reads, and swoony guys read this book. I really don't think you will be disappointed.  This is without a doubt one of my favorite reads of 2013.

Olivia Twisted by Vivi Barnes

***I received this eARC from Entangled Teen via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Olivia Twisted

17343436

Goodreads Description:

Olivia

He tilts my chin up so my eyes meet his, his thumb brushing lightly across my lips. I close my eyes. I know Z is trouble. I know that being with him is going to get me into trouble. I don’t care.

At least at this moment, I don’t care.

Tossed from foster home to foster home, Olivia’s seen a lot in her sixteen years. She’s hardened, sure, though mostly just wants to fly under the radar until graduation. But her natural ability with computers catches the eye of Z, a mysterious guy at her new school. Soon, Z has brought Liv into his team of hacker elite—break into a few bank accounts, and voila, he drives a motorcycle. Follow his lead, and Olivia might even be able to escape from her oppressive foster parents. As Olivia and Z grow closer, though, so does the watchful eye of Bill Sykes, Z’s boss. And he’s got bigger plans for Liv…

Z

I can picture Liv’s face: wide-eyed, trusting. Her smooth lips that taste like strawberry Fanta.

It was just a kiss. That’s all. She’s just like any other girl.

Except that she’s not.

Thanks to Z, Olivia’s about to get twisted.

My Thoughts:

This is a retelling of Oliver Twist. How does it compare? I couldn't tell you. I've never actually read Oliver Twist before, but I can tell you that this was an awesome book that I devoured quickly.

Olivia is a sixteen year old girl who has been handed a hard life. She's bounced from foster home to foster home. She recently had to leave what she thought would turn into her forever home only to be sent to a home of some very odd foster parents. Foster parents that turn out to be a lot shadier than I expected.

Olivia is a little standoffish at first but turns out to be a strong female lead with a good head on her shoulders. She goes through a lot in the book between new school, new friends, and dealing with her foster parents, but she doesn't depend on anyone else to get her through. I loved this about Olivia and it made it very easy to like her.

Z was the definition of arrogant at the beginning. He was cocky and a show-off. I was actually a little turned off from him at first because of how he was, but as I kept reading I found that it was just a front. After cracking through his shell and finding out more about Z he won me over. He ended up being there for Olivia when no one else was and being completely selfless with her in the end.

NO insta-love. THANK YOU for no insta-love. I've been lucky lately not to read so many YAs with insta-love lately. I'm not a fan of it so I loved that there was a build-up for Olivia and Z's relationship and that they weren't completely head over hills inlove after one chapter. Their relationship felt very real and was a great part of the book. The romance didn't overshadow the main story line, only added to it.

The tech part of the book was really enjoyable to me also. Z and Olivia's new friend, Sam (who also lives in the same foster home as Z), are hackers when not at school for a mysterious man that keeps their foster home running. I enjoyed the little competitions in the book and seeing Z in his element. The hacking brought Z's attention to something that I really didn't see coming and made the book end in a totally different direction than I thought it would go.

I would definitely recommend this YA to anyone that just enjoys YA in general. It's a quick read that will keep you glued from start to finish. I hope to see more from Vivi Barnes in the future.

Effortless With You by Lizzy Charles

***I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Swoon Romance, in exchange for an honest review.

Effortless With You

Goodreads Description:
18129111
School is out and Lucy is ready for the perfect summer: lazy days at the pool, invitations to the most exclusive parties, and romantic dates with her hot new boyfriend. That is, until she lands in trouble one too many times and her parents issue the ultimate punishment: a summer job. Suddenly, the summer can't end fast enough.

To make matters worse, the job is painting houses with Justin, the most popular, egotistical guy in school. Spending all summer with Justin might be other girls' dreams, but definitely not Lucy's. After all, Justin is cocky, annoying, and a jerk. So what if he's the most beautiful jerk Lucy's ever seen? Or that his grin makes her forget she’s mad at the world? Or that maybe, just maybe, there's more to Justin than Lucy realizes. Only one thing is certain: it won’t be the summer she wanted, but it might be exactly the one she needs.

My Thoughts:

I absolutely ADORE this book. It is one of the cutest, sweetest, heart-warming YA books I have ever picked up. I'm completely in love with the cover. It is beautiful and just puts a smile on my face. Lizzy Charles' writing had the same effect on me as the cover so it fits perfectly.

The main character Lucy is a 16 year old who is going through the same struggles as any normal teen her age would be; arguing with parents, fitting in, being cool in front of her friends, having a cute boyfriend, etc. She is an adorable girl that seems to be lost and just needs to find her way. She comes into some struggles between school, friends, and a certain crappy guy and this book shows a wonderful path of self-growth for her. I couldn't help but cheer her own along her path of finding her way and where she needed to be in life.

Justin is the popular, swoony guy with a HEART OF GOLD. I'm typically a big fan of the bad boys but I loved Justin. He was just too cute and so sweet. He comes off towards Lucy as being some superficial, arrogant jerk at first but he she soon finds out that there is SO much more to him. I applaud Lizzy for writing a YA male lead that treats a lady right for a change. *claps*

Another thing that I really enjoyed about this book is that the relationships that happen have FOUNDATION. So many YA books I read these days characters are throwing around "I love yous" at every glance and touch, which makes my head spin. Not this book though. This book is what a realistic relationship looks and feels like. I actually got to know the characters well and they got to know each other. It was refreshing to have a book not so overshadowed by romance but still had enough in there to make me swoon and want to cuddle it tight. This book highlights more character growth, friendships, and the path to getting to relationships. It was refreshing and I adored it. I can NOT wait for the sequel.

Lizzy Charles
When Lizzy Charles isn’t scrambling to raise her two spunky toddlers or caring for premature and sick babies as a neonatal intensive care nurse, she’s in a quiet corner writing or snuggled up with a novel and a few squares of dark chocolate. Black tea keeps her constant and she loves guacamole. She married her high school sweet heart, a heart-melting musician, so it’s no surprise she’s fallen in love with writing contemporary YA romance novels.

Interview:

Q: What age did you start writing?

A: For fun? First grade? With serious hope of becoming a publisher author, 25 years old. I’m 28 right now.

Q: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you like to be in?

A: A nurse and mother, which I am. I’m a registered nurse in a neonatal intensive care unit. I’m a mother to two toddlers and another  baby on the way.

Q: What author inspires you? Why?

A: My greatest inspiration comes from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. She did such a beautiful job of weaving the truth of love, evil, and beauty throughout her novels. Although I don’t write her genre, she definitely inspired me to write. In fact, she not only inspired me to write but to live the way I should, from the heart.

Q: What book has made the most impact on you? Why?

A: Every book I’ve loved has impacted me for various reasons.  Here are a few that have stuck with me: HP Series, The Giver, Speak, Pride and Prejudice, Eleanor and Park.

Q: Biggest writing quirk?

A: My first drafts are often written unintentionally in verse. Not a gorgeous verse though. More like bad seventh grade poetry. I spend a lot of time in my first editorial pass removing the rhyme before I let anyone else read it.

Q: Are you working on any other books right now?

A: Yes! The sequel to Effortless With You.

Q:What made you choose for Justin to be this rich kid with a heart of gold instead of being a spoiled and self-centered?

A: I set him up that way because it was an attribute that would give Lucy a reason to stereotype him. I love that I got to reveal a responsible guy behind that stereotype.

Q:Who was your favorite character to write?

A: My favorite character to write was Lucy. Effortless With You was my first novel ever written and I loved the process of discovering exactly who Lucy is as I wrote her, slowly revealing that to my audience. Now, the most fun character to write? Definitely Alex. He’s a blast.

Q: What inspired this book?

A: I started writing Effortless With You after the birth of my first daughter. It took me nine months to finish my first draft, which I completed the week I found out I was pregnant with my second daughter. The mother/daughter relationship within the book reflects both my fears and hopes of who I would become as a mother of two teenage daughters.

Q: Lucy is a pretty tough girl throughout the book and she has a lot of self-growth. Was that your main goal with her character?

A: It was, so that’s wonderful to hear you interpret her that way. I enjoy stories that refine a character, even when they have no idea they need it.

Q: A lot of YA we see these days are very bad about insta-love, your story line steered clear of that, did you make sure to do that or did it just kind of happen?

A: I definitely did not want Justin and Lucy to like one another right away. I wanted Lucy to understand herself, and her growing interest in Justin to reflect that.

This or That:

-White Chocolate or Milk Chocolate?

Neither. Dark!

-Coffee or Hot Chocolate to warm you during the cold months?

Hot Chocolate.

-Stand alone or Series?

Stand alone. I prefer a clean cut only because when I read the book literally takes over my life.

-Bad boys or Good guys (referring to fictional characters only)?

Good guys. But I really like the guys most who appear to be bad but are actually good!

Thanks so much Lizzy for the interview! Everyone make sure to leave Lizzy some comment love and come read my review Saturday!!
