The Outlanders by Erin Rhew Blog Tour + Giveaway

It's no secret how much I absolutely LOVE Erin Rhew's first installment in this trilogy, THE PROPHECY, so I'm really excited to be part of the blog tour for its sequel, THE OUTLANDERS. While I have been crazy busy I knew I wouldn't be able to do a review post in time for the tour so I asked Erin to do something extra fun for the blog!

Book Boys=FUN right?!

But first let me share a little something about the book then I'm handing over the blog to Erin =D

**As always, when posting about a sequel, keep in mind there could be possible spoilers if you haven't read book one**

With King Jesper dead and Prince Wilhelm mortally wounded, Halfling prince, Nash, and the Fulfilment, Layla, assume the throne of Etherea. They must contend with a new Prophecy Candidate who asserts her position, and Layla is surprised to find her fate intertwined with this challenger. Facing a myriad of choices, Nash and Layla’s decisions affect not only their own futures but that of two kingdoms.
Unbeknownst to the Ethereals or the Vanguards, a slumbering menace stirs in the south, awakened after centuries of slumber. The mysterious Outlanders, a force shadowed in mystery, sit poised to tip the balance of power, sending ripples of fear throughout both warring kingdoms.
Elder Werrick proved a formidable foe, but Layla may yet meet her match in the monstrous Outlander queen. This mistress of the dark’s plans, rooted in revenge and ancient lore, now threaten the livelihood of all three kingdoms.

Racing against time, Layla travels to the Borderlands—home of the Voltons and Ecclesiastics—to discover as much as she can about the war, the First Ones, and the prophecy itself. Lives teeter in the balance, kingdoms sit on the cusp of ruin, and a beast, greater than any she’s ever faced before, plots a catastrophic attack.

Now there is a sort of, kind of, a triangle type thingy in this trilogy. I'm personally a huge fan of triangles, if written well, so they never bother me. I will say though that this is NOT you run of the mill triangle. There are certain...umm mystical, magical twists to this particular romantic triangle.

Now PERSONALLY I'm a Nash gal. He's the perfect bruiting, tortured soul, but has a good heart male specimen, so of course he caught my eye. ;D For all the obvious, fun reasons I asked Erin to do us up a little fun "Prince Showdown". THANKS ERIN!!!!

Nash vs Wil

Crystal, you totally rock! Let’s all give her a virtual round of applause!! She’s a huge supporter of books and authors, and I just love her to pieces! Thank you so much for hosting me, girlie!!

Today, Crystal asked me to talk about Wil versus Nash. I’m sure you all know she’s Team Nash. She even has their ship name picked out: Crash! ;) But I know there are Team Wil fans out there too!

The more I talked to my Dream Team and Deek about this post, the more we realized Nash and Wil have a lot of the same characteristics. They just use them differently and for different purposes.

How do you compare two people? That's what we struggled with. People are so subjective, and their lists of positives and negatives are not binary.

What about loyalty? Wil is clearly loyal to his people, his family, and his friends. He is a king and tries to be a righteous one. He wants the best for all and tries to be fair and just. Nash claims to not be loyal to anyone but himself. Yet, behind these words lies a man whose heart beats of dedication. When he assumes the throne, he tries to lead in the way that he feels Wil would lead. His friends and family come before all others. Wil literally gives his life for what he believes in. But Nash too would die for those he loves.

What about intelligence? Nash is cunning and street smart. His ability to survive in chaotic and dangerous situations exceeds that of his brother. In a formal setting, he is passable, bordering on capable, though quite uncomfortable. Wil, on the other hand, feels at home in court and in formal, regal settings. He could sit at a table with any leader or diplomat from any land and excel. Does that make either of them smarter than the other? No. They are just intelligent and cunning in different ways.

Doing the right thing. Each man wants to do the right thing, but they see completely different paths to get there. Wil sees diplomacy and reason as the means to an end. At least, that is his first instinct. Pushed, he will fight, but that is not his preferred method of dealing with differing of opinions. Nash sees diplomacy as a formality that gets in the way of getting stuff done. Usually he just wants to get in and get right to the heart of the matter, even if it seems rash or foolish. Each method is effective. Though within each situation, the results may vary.

Instincts. Wil has great instincts...when it comes to running the kingdom. He has the ability to find a unique, generally peaceful solution to a problem. Clever and wise in a diplomatic situation. Nash also has natural instincts. He could survive in the wild on his own indefinitely and could plan a battle on his gut rather than on numbers and tactics. He is more apt to "feel" his way through a problem rather than rationalize it out.

Selflessness. Each man is willing to give up his life for what he believes in. Each would die for those he loves without hesitation.

Mannerisms. Wil is far more chivalrous than Nash, skills which serve a future king well in court. He would find a diplomatic ways to convey information while Nash would simply state it plainly.

Who are they? Wil knows exactly who he is—son to a king and heir to the throne. He was born to be king. Nash was born out of place. While he has the inner-strength to be king, that particular seat doesn't fit him, and he knows it. Hence he is so reluctant to lead and feels so out of place doing so.

So, take all that information, put it together, and what do we have?

Wil is the sensitive, strong leader who typically does not let his emotions get in the way.  He was raised with the all the love and blessing from his father, which Nash was denied.  He was raised as the crowned prince and learned how to be Etherea's leader.  Thankfully, he is a much better and stronger man than his father.  Layla has brought out a whole new side of him, and he likes who he is when he is with her.  He loves his country and values it above his own life (sacrificial).  At this point, he loves Layla so deeply but is willing to let her go for her own happiness as he thinks she is in love with Nash.

Nash is a loner who has never felt like he belongs anywhere so he has been drifting.  In his drifting, he is discovering his own values, not what has been told to him.  He knows who he is and who he isn't.  He is a reluctant interim king which he only accepted because of his great love and loyalty for his brother, not so much his country.  Loving Layla makes him feel like he is part of something bigger than he ever thought possible.  Despite his "approval" from Wil to be with Layla, he still can't be with her because he loves Wil too much to ever hurt him that way.

Both men have similar hearts.  They both love and value certain things and are willing to sacrifice everything for those things.  They both love their mom and sister, which says a lot about how kind they can be.  They love and admire each other deeply.  I think that if you asked them who is their most influential person, they would probably say each other.  I think that they both make each other better because of their differences while still having admiration for the other.  They also share a love for Layla- which is odd because you would think these two different brothers would fall for different girls.  Layla brings out the best in both of them but also causes them both extreme pain.

SO I hear all these things about Wil and I even agree with them, BUT I'm still team NASH! What team are you?

Don't forget to enter this awesome giveaway that Erin has provided and to leave her some love!!!

Books I Have Been OBSESSING Over + Giveaway

Okay, I've been having the toughest time writing reviews lately, specifically for these books. What's crazy is I'm OBSESSED and IN LOVE with these specific titles. I'm just having a hard time putting into words how much I truly love them without it all being an incoherent mess. My lovely friend, Jenna, did a post this week that I really liked and so I decided to do something similar! Thanks Jenna for the inspiration.

Released: 7/22/14
Publisher: Bloomsbury Childrens
Format: eARC
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥

This book was absolutely beautiful. I was really nervous starting out because parallel universes and I don't mesh well the majority of the time, but this story line was written so well. I absolutely loved the characters. Sabine was realistic and I was able to by sympathetic to her throughout everything she went through in the book. There is also some major romance in the book and it was done perfectly. It was believable and felt so real. I absolutely adored Ethan, and I love how they grew together. While this book was beautiful, it was also HEART BREAKING. I literally ended up in the fetal position, clutching a pillow, and ugly-crying on my Kindle. It really wasn't a pretty sight. This book really BROKE me. Now I want all of you to go out and read this book and be heartbroken and ruined right along with me. ;D

Okay, if you follow me on Twitter most of you already know I'm addicted to this book and that I absolutely LOVE it. Seriously it's an amazing thriller and has an amazing group of characters to boot. Sam is a really kick butt girl who goes in a male dominated world and shows every single one of them up. She goes into a situation where she knows she will be pushed around, looked down on, and she grits her teeth and pushes through every little thing they throw at her. She is someone that I rooted for the entire way through and I know everyone else will too. Drill, oh what all can I say about Drill?! He is fantastic. He is there for Sam in a way no one else could ever be. There is an amazing romance told BUT at the same time it doesn't over shadow this story, AND the female lead DOES NOT, I REPEAT DOES NOT, become weak because of the romance. This does not turn into a story where the guy she falls for is what makes her become strong/stronger, and she doesn't instantly become weak because he is around. This is something I absolutely love. It shows that you can have that romance, but you can be completely strong on your own also. All around this book is absolutely fantastic and I can not recommend it enough!

This book is seriously one of the, if not THE, most beautiful and touching book I have EVER read. I don't recall ever reading a book and the ending touching my heart and soul so much that it brought me to tears. This is a book that you will read and it will never leave you. The writing is insanely beautiful. It's eccentric, quirky, poetic, and fun. There are also so many amazing things this book deals with from family issues, sexual orientation, finding yourself, death, and love. It was amazing to have all this deep issues woven together so beautifully and then throwing art into the mix. I've never been much into art but this seriously made me want to go to museum and read up on things just because of how beautiful it is all made out to be. I'm extremely attached to all the characters in the book, though I have to admit Noah is my absolute favorite. He is so quirky and strange, but bright, bold, and beautiful. I love Jude and watching her find herself again. This is a book I would encourage anyone and everyone to pick up. I think it would have an amazing impact on everyone and touch them in some way. I will keep I'll Give You the Sun in my heart and soul forever.
And, Jandy Nelson- I would give all my fingers, the sun, the moon, the stars, and the sky up for this book, every single time. ♥

HISTORICAL FANTASY!! Do I even have to say more?? Yes? Well fine. First of all, the time period was amazing. Then the world itself was phenomenal. I could vividly see everything and never had any problem imagining this world that Jessamin lives in. I felt like I was there the whole time and had no trouble believing in any of the mysterious, or magical things that happened. I really love Jessamin. She is a really spunky, tough girl and always wants to meet her problems head on. I love how she wasn't trying to depend on anyone else when things got tough for her, and how much she wants to keep her friends safe even if it made things harder for her. I adore Finn. Jessamin and him work so well together, and it was interesting the way the storyline played out for those two. I found the magic and the way it worked fascinating. This is definitely one of those books that will be on my favorites shelf, that I will get out and read again and again.

(Thanks to Harper Teen for providing me with this ARC)

So are you guys OBSESSING over any specific books right now? I just can't quit talking about and recommending these books to people!!! Also I ended up with two finished copies of Illusions of Fate, SO I'm giving away a copy!!

Transcender by Vicki Savage Blog Tour + Giveaway

Transcender Trilogy

Suddenly plucked from her quiet Connecticut life and dropped into a post-disaster parallel world where most of the earth's population resides in enormous domes, eighteen year old Jaden Beckett lands in the middle of a kidnapping—her own!

Undercover Agent Ralston of the Inter-Universal Guidance Agency helps Jaden escape from her captors and promises to return her home as soon as he can arrange it. But he conceals from her the fact that she is really a Transcender, capable of traveling among alternate worlds at will. While waiting for passage home, Jaden assumes her parallel identity as a princess in the nation of Domerica. She discovers her mother is alive in this world—a miracle she never dreamed possible. But perhaps even more compelling is her blossoming, breathtaking romance with Ryder Blackthorn, her once and future soul mate.

When it comes time for Jaden to leave, she flatly refuses. IUGA claims the welfare of the entire galaxy depends upon her timely return. Jaden contends that, in this case, eternal love trumps destiny. Who will prevail?

Jaden Beckett makes the journey once again from her home in Connecticut to the nation of Domerica on an alternate earth. The Inter-Universal Guidance Agency has granted her thirty days within which to choose her ultimate destiny. She may remain in Domerica, return to Connecticut, or join the other Transcenders in Arumel.

On her arrival, Jaden finds that all is not perfect in paradise. Her mother, Queen Eleanor, is ill and grows frailer with each passing day. Her scheming uncle has moved into the palace and assumed the role of Lord High Steward of the land. But even more troubling are events that took place in Jaden’s absence which have caused her to question the depth of her fiancĂ©’s love.

All the while, Jaden's friendship with a handsome, young Transcender from Arumel deepens. He teaches her how to use her astonishing gift to travel to exotic parallel worlds and introduces her to others in the Transcender community.
When the time draws near for Jaden’s final decision, her choice is anything but simple.

Jaden Beckett has a secret unknown to those in her adopted homeland of Domerica: she is a Transcender, capable of traveling among parallel worlds at will. When the powerful Inter-Universal Guidance Agency's sophisticated computer models predict that Jaden will eventually cause the downfall of that agency, IUGA decides to destroy her first. In order to save herself, her family, and the man she loves, Jaden must fake her own death and leave Domerica for good. The plan seems sound, but on the day of IUGA's attack, things go terribly wrong.

Heartsick and alone, Jaden ventures to Arumel, a progressive nation on an alternate earth, where Transcenders conduct valuable inter-universal research. Just when she thinks she's found a safe, new life, IUGA makes its presence known. This time, Jaden is determined not to be driven away. She will fight to discover her place in the multiverse, the true meaning of destiny, and the keys to the mystery of eternal love.

Cover Reveal: LIARS, INC by Paula Stokes + Giveaway (INTL)

Paula Stokes asked me to help reveal the cover for her February 2015 release, LIARS, INC. (and of course I squealed in excitement and said a big fat YES!)

Here’s more info about the book from Goodreads:

It all starts with one little lie…
Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell lies to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts a business providing forged permission slips and cover stories for the students of Vista Palisades High. Liars, Inc. they call it. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?
When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn’t think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston’s body. Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer.
Can Max find the real killer before he goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit? Paula Stokes starts with one single white lie and weaves a twisted tale that will have readers guessing until the explosive final chapters.

And now the moment you’ve been waiting for—THE COVER!

Isn't it all kinds of mysterious and epic?!

Here’s a little more info from Paula:

OMG, I’ve been flailing about the awesomeness of this cover since April. I saw it and was basically like HOLY COVER LOTTERY!! :D

I’ve talked about how LIARS, INC. is very different from THE ART OF LAINEY, and this cover really highlights that. LIARS has first-person narration, a bit of romance, and similar fast-paced dialogue to LAINEY, but that’s where the major similarities end. This book is a dark mystery for fans of I HUNT KILLERS, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS (the TV show, because I’ve never read the books), or old-school Christopher Pike novels. I hope you love it, because if it does well I might get to write a companion novel, and I’m seriously not ready to let go of these characters. Max is a little aloof and slackerish so it might take you time to warm up to him, but his girlfriend Parvati is totally badass and fun, and both of them really grow and change over the course of the novel. (You know how I love me some character development!) And no worries, this is a total standalone book, plotted and written as a solo novel.

What do you think? Do you like this cover

Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne + Giveaway

**Thank you Disney Hyperion for providing me with this ARC copy**

Growing up on Forge’s streets has taught Kyra how to stretch a coin. And when that’s not enough, her uncanny ability to scale walls and bypass guards helps her take what she needs.

But when the leader of the Assassins Guild offers Kyra a lucrative job, she hesitates. She knows how to get by on her own, and she’s not sure she wants to play by his rules. But he’s persistent—and darkly attractive—and Kyra can’t quite resist his pull.

Tristam of Brancel is a young Palace knight on a mission. After his best friend is brutally murdered by Demon Riders, a clan of vicious warriors who ride bloodthirsty wildcats, Tristam vows to take them down. But as his investigation deepens, he finds his efforts thwarted by a talented thief, one who sneaks past Palace defenses with uncanny ease.

When a fateful raid throws Kyra and Tristam together, the two enemies realize that their best chance at survival—and vengeance—might be to join forces. And as their loyalties are tested to the breaking point, they learn a startling secret about Kyra’s past that threatens to reshape both their lives.

My Thoughts:

Because this book is OUT OF THIS WORLD FANTASTIC!!!!

MIDNIGHT THIEF is definitely one of my favorite books of the year. It is a fun young adult fantasy full of unexpected twists and turns and it kept me engrossed from start to finish. The world building was very vivid and I felt I could see the streets of Forge in my mind. I adored the characters and became quickly attached to them and their well-being. The plot build up was fantastically done; Blackburne pulled the rug out from under me SEVERAL times! There was definitely one twist that even with all my theories for this particular part of the story I never connected the dots to. I think a lot of people will be surprised where this story goes and the ending will definitely leave you wanting the next book.

Kyra and Tristam are my favorite characters in this book. Kyra had a good bit of character development from the beginning of the book until the end and she came out much stronger than she started, and she was already a pretty tough girl. She also got a good bit smarter, she was quite naive at times and especially when it comes to James and the Assassin's Guild. Tristam really ended up surprising me in this story and I really hope to see more interaction with Kyra and him in the future installments, I have certain things I want to happen between these two and I sure hope they do! James was a very complex character and though at times I wanted to wring his neck I still had a bit of a soft spot for him.

(I also want to let everyone know that there is a prequel- that is free at this time- about James, called POISON DANCE. I recently read it and I can’t decide if it’s better to read it before or after reading this book. I think it will change your opinion dramatically of James after you read it. It did mine anyways.)

The fantasy creatures in this book, the demon cats, were a really intriguing part of the story. The demon riders have quite an impact on the things happening in Forge and that part of the story was hands down one of my favorite parts. Blackburne did a really good job going into detail about them and even how the Demon Riders originated. I thought it was very well done.

Now I know most people typically enjoy romance in their fantasy novels, while there is *some* in this novel it did not take over the story at all-which I LOVE. It was actually more of an angst fest which I’m overly obsessed with. Seriously, anything that makes me angsty and anxious for things is awesome in my book.

I seriously can't say enough how much I love this book and think any fantasy reader should give it a try. I've been trying to write this review for a month now and I still just can't express how much I loved it. I feel like this review does it no justice what so ever.

Welcome to the Dark House by Laurie Faria Stolarz + Giveaway

**Thank you Disney Hyperion for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

What’s your worst nightmare?

For Ivy Jensen, it’s the eyes of a killer that haunt her nights. For Parker Bradley, it’s bloodthirsty sea serpents that slither in his dreams.

And for seven essay contestants, it’s their worst nightmares that win them an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at director Justin Blake’s latest, confidential project. Ivy doesn’t even like scary movies, but she’s ready to face her real-world fears. Parker’s sympathetic words and perfect smile help keep her spirits up. . . at least for now.

Not everyone is so charming, though. Horror-film fanatic Garth Vader wants to stir up trouble. It’s bad enough he has to stay in the middle of nowhere with this group—the girl who locks herself in her room; the know-it-all roommate; “Mister Sensitive”; and the one who’s too cheery for her own good. Someone has to make things interesting.

Except, things are already a little weird. The hostess is a serial-killer look-alike, the dream-stealing Nightmare Elf is lurking about, and the seventh member of the group is missing.

By the time Ivy and Parker realize what’s really at stake, it’s too late to wake up and run.

My Thoughts:

Okay maybe it's just me because I don't typically read a ton of horror but good GRIEF this book FREAKED ME OUT!!!! I mean at the point where I literally went to bed the night I finished with the bathroom light on so my bedroom wouldn't be dark like a 5 year old might do! Yes it was that creepy to me, I'm not ashamed!

I was really concerned how this book would go when I saw that it switched POVs between all seven characters (well really it ends up being 6). I was worried that I would get confused and not be able to remember what was what, but it was done flawlessly. Each chapter is titled and each character really has their own voice so it's easy to know who you are reading about.

Besides this being a horror book it also tapped into some deep issues almost all of the characters have. Garth really creeped me out most of the book, he is just a really weird dude.He also was a bit of a butt at times, but with his back story I can see where it comes from. Ivy is so sweet and her back story made me feel so bad for her. Parker is a great guy who aspires to be a film producer, and he was definitely a charmer. Natalie is strange, strange, strange. I did find out why and I can't blame her for being that way but....STRANGE. Shayla is a bit self-absorbed and she doesn't really get past that, but it's not overly annoying so it's easy to look past. Frankie was a cool guy and the type of person that you could easily be buds with and he was really sweet to Natalie so he got extra cool points in my book. We don't really get to know Taylor too well in this book so I can't really judge much about her.

When everyone shows up for their "fun-filled horror" weekend things really start getting down to business. This is definitely not a slow-paced book and it kept me on my toes. It was really hard to put down and I was biting my nails and hearing random noises in my house that I know are normal but still freaked me out! There were twists and turns at every page and I was kept guessing the entire time on what would happen with everyone. I felt like I was seriously in this world. In one part when everyone goes to their own individualized place I got very nervous and anxious because I wasn't sure what would happen. *nail biter*

So I was left with a ton of unanswered question, some HUGE twists, and a bit of a cliffhanger at the end. I had to immediately tweet Laurie and ask her WILL THERE BE A SEQUEL??? And yes folks there will be!! THANK GOODNESS!! So when it comes out, I'm going to curl up in a ball with all my lights on and pray I don't get too crazy terrified!

The only con I had was the little bit of romance in the book between two characters seemed kind of fast for me, BUT at the same time in the circumstances I could *kind of* understand it, but I don't' know, still bothered me some! Definitely would recommend this book to horror lovers! Maybe you won't be as big of a baby about it as I was! LOL
